3. Keep the statement in the positive. Avoid the use of negatives, such as “do not” or “is not”.

The subconscious mind does not do well with negatives. (Remember the “pink elephant on the high wire with the tutu” and the instruction not to think of this?) I had a lady in my workshop want to move away from the belief “I am alone”. Her positive statement was “I am not alone”. This is not affirming enough, and as the subconscious mind thinks largely in pictures, it is really programming aloneness. A better statement would be “I am connected” or “I am an important part of All That Is”.

Here is another example.

When my client Stacey was growing up, the belief in her family was that her brother was the creative one. Although she loved to paint and draw, she always felt dissatisfied. Her feelings, when explored, were that she frequently “felt second best”; this translated into the work place as well. She muscle-tested the negative belief using the statement “I am uncreative” and then brought herself into alignment with the affirming statements “I am creative”, and rather than “I am not unequal to my brother” she framed the belief positively, “I am, and have always been, equal to my brother”. She also added the belief “I am free to create”.
